She attended the University of Berkley as a French major but soon transitioned to Dramatic Arts major after her first audition. In her studies at Berkley it was required for her to take directing courses for her masters, which then lead her to the Scholar Director PHD program. She soon dropped out of the PHD program so that she could pursue acting in a small theatre company in California, but they did not have enough directors so she volunteered. She first started directly seriously in the early 1980s but there were not many female directors at the time but in the U.S more and more playwrights were writing plays about women. Just as this movement of women playwrights and directors came about Virginia was just beginning her transition from actor to director. It took Virginia until she was 25 years old to realize that she had been directing her entire life; she was an only child and often invented small plays that the adults in her life would participate in.〔personal communication〕
